Ten floors below Grand Central Station is M42, a secret room that is not on any map. The room was built in 1913 to house GCT’s massive rotary power apparatus and is still used today to protect the electricity that delivers over 1 million people a day into NYC through Grand Central Terminal’s many train lines. This location is so important that Hitler himself tried to destroy it during WWII, but his four spies were apprehended in Long Island by the FBI before they could do any damage. Don’t worry if they had made it to the 10 floor deep fortress, they would have been met by the US military. In fact, during WWII if a civilian had stumbled upon M42, they would have had to wait until the war was over before leaving the bunker. Better not get on the wrong elevator in 1943!
M42’s existence remained top secret until 1980 and even today, no one without a top secret clearance knows its exact location.
