My wife and I made our way to Stone Street after Eddie (our NYC bike-tour tour guide) took us on a thoroughly enjoyable (and slightly exhausting) four hour trek around lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. It was last Saturday afternoon and the street was hopping. For those that don’t know about this little area on the South tip of the Island, Stone Street is a cobblestone street just a stone’s throw (pun intended) from Fraunces Tavern – the place where George Washington bid farewell to his troops as he passed from military to civilian life.
But we digress…
We stumbled upon a restaurant by the name of Smorgas Chef. This little place was surprisingly enjoyable and not too crowded at the time we arrived (5:30). Smorgas Chef served a variety of American Style options and very importantly, my wife was able to satisfy her gluten free palette as well.
It was clear the manager kept the place running efficiently (they even had a quiet blender sitting atop the bar – a secret sign of a high quality venue) and we knew that we’d get exactly what we ordered. It felt efficient in an almost Germanic sort of way.
The food was very good and fast, but not too fast. The wait staff was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, and the price was quite reasonable given that this is Manhattan after all. The décor was contemporary and the restroom was clean (our pet peeve).
We’d definitely come back again. Nice job Smorgas Chef
